Set in Paris 1942-43, the film traces the itineraries of two real-life figures, director Jean Devaivre (Jacques Gamblin) and screenwriter Jean Aurenche (Denis Podalydès). Happily married with a small child, Devaivre joins Continental Films, a German-controlled production company which provides an excellent cover for his growing involvement with the Resistance. Aurenche, a romantic womanizer, is openly disdainful of the Germans and refuses all offers to work with them. Often funny and gentle, this is, above all, an impassioned account of life in an occupied country. Master filmmaker Tavernier asks, “Where do you draw the line between collaboration, survival and resistance?”

The film received two Silver Bear Awards from the Berlin Festival: Jacques Gamblin (Best Actor) and Antoine Duhamel (Music).
