Visually arresting, this often whimsical debut feature tackles immigration and social integration. Justin (Kalomba Mboyi) and his father Dieudonné (Ansou Diedhou) are illegal immigrants from Burundi living in Brussels. One night, to watch their favourite Congolese soccer star, Justin hooks up the TV cable feed from downstairs. The neighbors protest by throwing the set out the window and sending Dieudonné on the lam. Caught by police, he is slated for deportation. Justin enlists a former anarchist (Jan Decleir) and his girlfriend (Antje De Boeck) to get his father back. Hop, a Burundi folktale about the pygmies’ magical ability, proves a source of inspiration for Justin. Hop is the first Belgian film shot in black and white 24fps digital video – and to beautiful effect.
