Sofia, 20, lives with her parents in Casablanca. Following a denial of pregnancy, she finds herself illegally giving birth to a baby out of wedlock. The hospital leaves her 24 hours to provide the papers of the father of the child before alerting the authorities.
Buoyed by an excellent script, this first full-length film by Meryem Benm’Barek is a thrilling feminist study, dissecting the double standards that divide Moroccan society.
— Fabien Lemercier, Cineuropa
This admirably mordant film deserves to travel widely on the festival circuit as well as art houses beyond its Francophone countries of origin.
— Jay Weissberg, Variety
Sofia is an incredibly refined story rich with multi-dimensional layers in both the characters and the plot. Benm’Barek generates fervour and then exceeds expectations by giving us a simple setup and then taking us for a ride that no one sees coming. It’s so refreshing.
— Zoe Tamara, The UpComing
